Average Calculator
Calculate the mean, median, mode and range for a set of numbers
What is the Average Calculator?
The Average Calculator takes any list of numbers and instantly returns the three most common measures of central tendency — mean, median and mode — along with the range, sum and count. It's useful for quickly summarizing test scores, survey data, prices or any other numeric list.
How to Use the Average Calculator
- Enter your numbers separated by commas or spaces (e.g.
10, 20, 30, 25, 15). - Read the results — mean, median, mode, range, sum and count update instantly as you type.
Mean vs. Median vs. Mode
- Mean — the sum of all values divided by how many there are. Sensitive to outliers.
- Median — the middle value when the numbers are sorted. Less affected by extreme values than the mean.
- Mode — the value (or values) that appear most often in the list.
Example
For the data set 10, 20, 30, 25, 15: the mean is 20, the median is 20, there is no repeating value so no mode, and the range (max − min) is 20.
Frequently Asked Questions
Use the median when your data has outliers or is skewed — for example, average income is often reported as a median because a few very high earners would distort the mean.
Yes — if two or more values tie for the highest frequency, the data set is multimodal and this calculator lists all of them.
