What is the Tip Calculator?
The Tip Calculator works out how much to tip at a restaurant, café or bar, and splits the total bill evenly between any number of people. Just enter the bill amount, pick or type a tip percentage, and set the number of people at the table — the total, tip amount and each person's share update instantly.
How to Use the Tip Calculator
- Enter the bill amount shown on your check, before tip.
- Choose a tip percentage using the quick-select buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%) or type a custom amount.
- Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
- Read the result — total bill with tip, the tip amount, and the amount each person owes.
Tip Calculation Formula
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
Example Calculation
A dinner bill comes to $85 and you want to leave an 18% tip, split between 3 people. The tip amount is $85 × 0.18 = $15.30, so the total is $100.30. Split three ways, each person pays $33.43.
Typical Tipping Guidelines (US)
- 15% — considered acceptable service at a sit-down restaurant.
- 18–20% — standard for good service, the most common range.
- 20%+ — for excellent service.
- Tipping customs vary significantly by country — in the UK, Canada and Australia, tipping norms and expected percentages can differ from the US.
Frequently Asked Questions
In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for sit-down service, with 18–20% typical for good service. Tipping norms differ elsewhere — always check local custom.
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional convention, though many people simply tip on the total bill for simplicity. Either approach is commonly accepted — use whichever amount you enter into the calculator.
The calculator adds the tip to the bill, then divides the total evenly by the number of people you enter. It assumes an even split — for itemized splitting based on what each person ordered, you'll need to tally individual items separately.
